The Advent calendar

25/11/2020 - Activités enfants anglais

paper made advent calendar

Christmas is approaching very fast, and as everyone knows, it’s the children’s favorite holidays! After a particular year due to the pandemic, it’s important as the festive season approaches to focus on what really matters: family, friendship, conviviality, sharing.

Those are essential values that probably have marked your year, and wich are very important to transmit to children, however young they may be.

If you are spending the holidays with your children and want to calm down their excitement as December 24th approaches, you can keep them waiting by creating their own Advent calendar. An activity that will teach them about the notion of time passing, while mobilizing their creativity and developing their motor skills.

Requiring little equipment, the Advent calendar is the ideal activity to wait for Christmas while having fun together!

YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS :

colored pencils

- Scissors
- Colored pencils
- Rope or ribbon
- Glue
- A hanger
-  The printable pouches
you will find in the link below: click here to download the Advent calendar!

You will need to use scissors, so stay alert!  Preferably use school scissors with round tips, and above all, offer the child some help for the most delicate manipulations.

In order to make the activity even more instructive, you can, all along, remind or teach the kid some Christmas english vocabulary

For example, you can learn them about some words like:

-    Garlands (guirlandes)
-    Bells (cloches)
-    Christmas tree (sapin de Noël)
-    Toys (jouets)
-    Candy cane (sucre d’orge)
-    Gloves (gants)
-    Presents Gifts (cadeaux)

To make this Advent calendar a personalized and original object, don’t hesitate to provide them with other things to personalize their small envelopes as much as they want. In addition to colored pencils, you can provide them with stickers, glitters.. everything to please little artists

HOW TO PROCEED :

- Start by cutting out, folding and gluing the 24 small envelopes:  the little ones can then color and personalize them however they want. Take advantage of this step to make a quick reminder of the english colors, thanks to the use of colored pencils!

-  Drill a hole into the envelope.

- Together, hide inside a little surprise for each day: a candy, a bracelet, a toy car... they will be revealed as December progresses!

- Thread the ribbon/rope through the hole previously created, so that you can hang your little envelopes.

- Using the ribbon/rope, hang the finished envelopes to the hanger

Congratulations! Their Advent calendar is finished and ready to use!

Don't hesitate to discuss with your child the specific rules concerning the Advent calendar, such as opening only one envelope per day or waiting for the time of the day dedicated to its opening (when you return in the evening or when their arrive after school with the nanny for example).  After all, the goal is also to make them wait

Together, you can finally count the days until Christmas, and watch out the sky, looking for Santa Claus 😊
