Tip of the Month: How to teach children through music
Don’t expect children to start singing the song straight away. Children learn first by listening. It is a good idea to show some pictures related to the song before they listen to allow the children to have an idea of what the music is about before it begins. Follow these steps when introducing a new song:
- Show flashcards/teach actions before you listen to the music.
- Listen to the music entirely on the CD (do not sing or encourage the children to sing). This is a chance for them to listen. If the song is not on the CD, but can be found onYouTube, familiarise yourself with the song so you are feeling confident before you begin.
- The pace of musics on CD/internet is often too fast for children when they are learning. Try and sing the song at a slower tempo. Stop after each line or after half a line and encourage the children to repeat. If there are actions, you can do them at the same time, children learn better with actions to help them.
- Repeat until the children are confident and then introduce a little more.
- When you have completed the music, sing it from the beginning again.
- The music can be played on the CD throughout the workshop as background music. If the song isn’t on the CD, sing the song to the children as they are completing their activities.
- Start each session by singing that day’s song and songs you have previously learnt together.
