Halloween : where it all started

Do you know where Halloween comes from? Halloween seems to be of celtic origin. People who lived in the celts area (now north of France, Ireland and the United Kingdom) used to celebrate the new year on the 1st of November. On the 31st of October at night they celebrated the new year to come (as we do on December 31st) and this day was associated in celts’ minds with death.

These people believed that during that night the connection between the word of the living and the dead was established and that people could see ghost of the dead. After that, Pope Gregory III decided to praise all saints on the 1st of November. All Saint’s Day were created and that’s why the day before were called All Hallow’s Eve, later Halloween it and took the tradition from the celts. Nowadays, the event is characterized by the trick-or-treating game played by children all over the world during this scary night.
