Cheap & easy French recipes for foreigners in France

As a student, most of the time you will only have a little bit of money or even a fully equipped kitchen that would enable you to satisfy your culinary impulses. And if you have an English-speaking job in France, it can be hard to find some time!

But don’t worry, we’re here to help! Here is an article about four dishes you can make really fast (and eat even faster) even without a fully equipped kitchen, when you’re a foreign student in France :), Enjoy!

DISH 1: Sicilian Penne with tuna and Camembert for 1 person

Tired of your traditional pasta with Ketchup or Bolognese sauce? Why not adding a typical French ingredient in it? Such as … the Camembert from Normandy. 10 minutes is enough for this amazing dish!

sicilian penne

What you need is a Camembert (Coeur de Lion), Penne (100g), tuna can (63g), dried tomatoes (25g), black olives (25g), olive oil, balsamic vinegar and basilica.

Cook your pastas in the water (So far, same as usual). Meanwhile, cut the tomatoes and crumble the tuna.

Once the pasta is tender, add the tomatoes, the tuna and the sauce (2 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 of balsamic vinegar) to the pastas. Then, cut the Camembert into small cubes and add it on the pastas with the basilica. This is ready. Let’s eat!

DISH 2: Toasted Mozarella, tomatoes and avocado sandwich for 1 person

In French we say “Croque-monsieur”. This dish seems to have French origins… and also a weird name, we admit it.

The recipe is simple. You just need 2 slices of toast, 1 avocado, 1 mozzarella, 1 tomato, and olive oil.

First, cut the tomato, the mozzarella and the avocado into slices. Then, put a knob of butter in your hot pan and put one of the slice of bread in it. Then, add the tomato, the avocado and the mozzarella pieces on your bread and add the other slice of bread.  Wait 3 minutes and turn your bread once. Wait 3 more minutes and eat your sandwich! Be careful, it is warm!

DISH 3: Speculos Dessert without an oven

Are you thinking about offering your guests a “Yaourt aux fraises” or a “compote de pomme”? No. We know you need to change your habits and impress your friends with an extraordinary dessert. We have a good one. Just make sure you don’t tell them how easy it is and they will surely believe you’re an amazing chef ;) Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone!

You’ll need milk (750ml), cornflour (maïzena, 45g), sugar (4 tablespoons), Speculoos spread (180g), and Speculoos cookies (14).

Put the milk, the maïzena, the sugar, and the Speculoos Spread in a saucepan and cook it over low heat. Keep mixing during the cooking. Once the mixture is thick, spread it into little cups. Let the mixture in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Then, crunch the Speculoos cookies and put the crumbs on your dish.

It actually made me hungry I can’t wait to go home and make one myself!

This dish is not French but you can do it for a “Rendez-vous” to impress the French girl or boy you invited around. And romanticism is definitely French ;).

DISH 4: Nutella Rolls

We know, what you are going to say “THAT’S NOT A FRENCH DISH!!?” And you’re right, but… did you know that almost 1/3 of the worldwide production of Nutella is produced in the Ferrero factory in France (Normandy)? We know it doesn’t make it French but we also know that you love Nutella and that’s why we found a great recipe for your long winter evenings.

You’ll need: A bit of Milk, an egg, a bit of sugar, slices of toast (The brand Harry’s is better), oil and of course NUTELLA.

What you have to do is as easy as ABC (In French we say, “simple comme bonjour”, literally “Easy as hello”). First, flatten you slice of bread. Then, spread Nutella on your bread. Then, dive your Nutella bread on a preparation made of an egg and some milk. Then, put the bread on the pan (with oil) and let it cook. When it’s done, you can eat it cold or warm!
