Tip of the Month: Learning through Cooking

Baby-speaker cooking with a little girl

All children like cooking and learning to cook! Exploit this interest by teaching them some basic cooking vocabulary while having fun and making a tasty snack! In order to make the session as educational, safe and fun, here are some tips to follow:

1) Prior to a cooking session: You need to introduce a range of vocabulary to the children, so it is important to plan ahead!

  • You can use flashcards to introduce the different lexical sets in the topic of food. Make sure you introduce a limited number of items at the beginning (e.g. 10) and then build in revision of these items and extend vocabulary in subsequent lessons.
  • Practice the vocabulary by playing games with the flashcards, for example matching or memory games.
  • To consolidate written forms of basic food vocabulary you could use simple food vocabulary matching worksheets
  • To help prepare the children for the cooking activity, go over the cooking vocabulary that you will use as well as utensils and actions (like cutting, stirring, whipping) using activities like matching exercises, miming games. You can also use videos like this one to illustrate.

2) In the kitchen: make sure the children know what their role will be and what is safe for them to do

  • Explain the safety rules to follow in terms of not getting close to hot surfaces, using knifes and electrical appliances
  • Read the recipe together to ensure then children understand all the sections
  • Make it an interactive task where you take turns showing the child how to do something while repeating the vocabulary for the actions, utensils, and food items, and then allowing them to try
  • Designate certain tasks to the child to make them feel more responsible!
  • If you have several children, allow the younger one to do simple tasks, but also make them feel important and involve them in the explanations. Perhaps ask them to bring you the ingredients!
  • Allow for a recipe that includes some final decoration touches, kids love to be creative in the kitchen!
  • Once you finish cooking, make sure you leave time for cleaning up and involve the children in helping you with doing the dishes / drying while reviewing the vocabulary at hand.
  • ENJOY YOUR SNACK!
